Who is responsible?
Vehicles whose keeper lives in the Rems-Murr-Kreis are deregistered by the registration authority of the Landratsamt Rems-Murr-Kreis (district office). This also applies to Fellbach, which belongs to the Rems-Murr-Kreis. The registration authority has its head office in Waiblingen and further locations in the district.
Addresses, opening hours and whether you need to book an appointment in advance change from time to time. So check the website of the Landratsamt Rems-Murr-Kreis or give them a call before you go. For vehicles registered elsewhere, the authority where you live is generally the right place to go; ask there about your particular case.
Which documents do you need?
For deregistration, officially called Außerbetriebsetzung, the following are usually required:
- the registration certificate Part I (formerly Fahrzeugschein),
- both number plates, so that the official seal stickers can be cancelled,
- a valid ID, if you go yourself,
- a written power of attorney and a copy of the keeper's ID, if someone else handles the deregistration.
The registration certificate Part II (formerly Fahrzeugbrief) is usually not needed for a simple deregistration. But you will definitely need it for a later sale. So it does no harm to have it to hand.
Deregistering online with i-Kfz
Many vehicles can now also be deregistered online via the i-Kfz procedure, without a visit to the authority. A few requirements usually apply:
- The registration certificate Part I has a field with a concealed security code that you scratch off.
- The seal stickers on the number plates also have a concealed code. Older stickers without a code are not sufficient.
- You can verify your identity online, for example with the online ID function of your identity card.
Which options are currently offered and exactly how online deregistration works is explained by the Landratsamt on its website. The authority will also tell you the fees.
What happens after deregistration?
Deregistration ends the vehicle tax for the vehicle; the registration authority usually passes the data on to customs (Zoll). The insurer is usually informed as well. Nevertheless, let your insurer know yourself, especially if you have sold the vehicle. A deregistered vehicle may no longer be parked on public roads, so it needs a private parking space.
Keep the deregistration confirmation in a safe place. It is your proof that the vehicle was no longer registered to you from that day on.
Sell instead of deregistering yourself
If you want to sell your car anyway, you can often skip the trip to the registration authority altogether. If you sell your vehicle to VK Automobile, we take care of the deregistration for you. You give us the vehicle, keys and papers, and we handle the rest.
We also buy vehicles that have already been deregistered. Which papers you should have ready is explained in our guide Documents for selling. If the registration certificate Part II is missing, the guide Selling a car without the registration certificate will help.
